My New Bass Rig

Sooooo, instead of shipping my 400lb MesaBoogie (God, do I miss it) Buster 200 Combo all the way to California from Rhode Island, I decided to keep that sucker in storage and just buy a new one. I settled on the SWR SM-500 Professional Series amplifier, and a Trace Elliot 4×10 cabinet.

SWR SM-500:

SWR SM-500

This head has every feature you’d ever want in your rig, built-in. Some of the features include, 1x 12AX7 Preamp tube, 500-watt solid state power, Active/Passive inputs, para-graphic equalizer with crossover output capabilities linked directly to your frequency range tweaks, Active Limiter for hot basses, ‘treble transparency’ to help limit those shrilly highs while popping/sliding, an FX loop, Direct Out (after Tube-Preamp), and a separate crossover volume control.

Trace Elliot 4×10:

Trace Elliot 4x10

Holy shit this thing is heavy, but worth every calorie I burn moving it. It weighs in at about 120lbs with 4x 10 inch speakers rated for 250 watts. I can only imagine the brutal size of the magnets pushing the paper. This cab alone can fill the room. Just imagine how awesome it will be when i get the 1×15 and hook it up to the crossover!!!!!!

By the way, if you want to hear what this badass monster can do you’ll have to come to The Key Club in Los Angeles, on May 2nd, and see my band thatwasthen.

Artimus Pyle - Lynyrd Skynyrd

In Light of Brian Powell’s death, I figured I’d check in on the rest of the band (Lynyrd Skynyrd) to see what their reactions were. Here’s a part of a recent blog post by Artimus Pyle, from Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Artimus here,

It’s 6:24 Thursday October 18th, 2007.  As you all know, I never go online.  But, Saturday is a very strange anniversary.  We lost Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Dean, and our pilot and co-pilot, Walter McCreary and John Gray.  So for our friends Leon and Allen, we remember the plane crash.  Thank you all for keeping the music alive all these years.  The radio stations, movie sound tracks, television, and now even KFC commercials, keep the music in our hearts every day.  It’s amazing…….I am proud to be included in this great music.  And thanks so much for your votes in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Artimus Pyle, drummer RVZ’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Lynyrd Skynyrd

The impact of Lynyrd Skynyrd on American rock and roll began with the harmonious blend of guitar driven rock with southern blues roots and can be heard today in the new rock music of the 21st Century. Artimus Pyle’s powerful and distinctive double bass drumming helped define the legendary Skynyrd sound. Artimus’ live debut with the band took place in Jacksonville’s Sgt Pepper’s Club in October 1974.  The years Artimus played with Skynyrd were the years that solidified the legend behind the band with classic rock songs such as “Saturday Night Special”; “Gimme Back My Bullets”; “That Smell”; “I Know A Little” and “Freebird”. The band quickly developed into one of the nation’s top touring draws with a grueling schedule of 300 shows a year.  During the next few years Lynyrd Skynyrd’s songs became radio staples. Their album, ‘Street Survivors’, had just been released to critical and popular acclaim. The ambitious new tour, just days underway, saw sellout crowds. On October 20, 1977, as the sun was setting in Mississippi, the chartered plane ran out of fuel and fell from the sky. [ artimus pyle . com ]

Ars Technica reports: As anyone who has held up a lighter alongside friends during a second encore can tell you, social networking and music are meant to sing together. MySpace reminded everyone of its roots last month with the launch of MySpace Music, and inside sources say that Facebook may finally rock out with its own duet soon.

Music has always been one of MySpace’s shining features, so well-known that it’s part of a supposed social networking divide. Long before News Corp. purchased it, MySpace became the place for independent–and increasingly mainstream–musicians to build a community with their fans. Now, with last month’s introduction of a 5 million-strong catalog of downloadable and streamable songs from all the major labels and (arguably not enough) indies, MySpace finally took its next logical leap into becoming a full-blown social hub for music.

With Facebook’s roots as a private bulletin board for college students, it has yet to cross into MySpace’s territory when it comes to music. While additions in recent years of “Pages” have allowed users to become “fans” of products or musicians, Facebook has never held a candle to MySpace’s integration of tools for artists to promote themselves and their music. Sure, Facebook’s recently- pened platform has opened a few doors for users to stream music and share their favorite artists via apps such as iLike (with 5 million monthly users) and Rhapsody. But this middleware still means that music isn’t an integral component of the Facebook experience.

The Sea Organ of Zadar, Croatia

The Sea Organ of Zadar, Croatia

This incredible piece of architecture is built along the coast line of the 3,000-year-old city Zadar, Croatia. The Sea Organ of Zadar attracts thousands of tourists and locals each year with its soothing and “meditative” lullaby. The organ was created as an architectural object to remedy the never-ending concrete wall which was the product of post-WWII reconstruction.

A set of thirty-five pipes run through two-hundred and thirty feet of white marble steps. The marble steps dissolve into the sea. Underneath, the pipes open to receive the oscillating energy of the sea waves. The resulting compression and decompression of air powers the sound of the pipe organ. A row of holes in the top row of steps allow the organ to breathe, while holes on top of the structure speak the sound from the resonating chambers. The organ’s harmonic pipes create a song which is “unpredictable but tuned.”

The organ was opened in April, 2005 and received the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2006.
